WSU Hip Hop Congress in unison with YWCA and
TellUsDetroit.com Presents the “I AM WOMAN” Expo
Fighting Against Domestic and Sexual Abuse
Detroit, MI—WSU Hip Hop Congress, YWCA of
Metropolitan Detroit, TellUsDetroit.com along with
sponsors DMC, Verizon Wireless and MGM Grand Detroit,
and community partners will host the “I AM WOMAN” Expo
in recognition of October being Domestic Violence
Awareness Month. The Expo will bring together women from
all backgrounds and ages from all over the Metro Detroit
area for a day of enlightenment, empowerment, education,
and inspiration.
This comprehensive, free empowerment Expo will be held
October 31st, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at Wayne
State University Student Center Building located at 5221
Gullen Mall, Detroit, MI. More than 2,000 women are
expected to attend.
Domestic Violence statistics are climbing at alarming
rates. According to the National Coalition Against
Domestic Violence at least one in every four women have
been physically abused or sexually assaulted during her
lifetime. An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of
physical assault by an intimate partner each year. On
average, more than three women are murdered by their
husbands or boyfriends in this country every day.
“Being a domestic violence survivor I understand the
challenges that women encounter when it comes to making
healthy choices in their lives. My goal is to create an
environment that will plant seeds of consciousness
within women and expose them to healthy options,
resources, people, and products that will create a
stronger foundation in which they can be proud of and
build upon,” says Marshell Lumas, Special Events
Coordinator for Tellusdetroit.com and Founder of the “I
AM WOMAN” Expo.
The Expo will provide education and awareness,
continental breakfast and lunch, free health screenings,
and resources and literature from a plethora of
participating organizations. Tony Gaskins, Jr., author
of the best-selling book What Daddy Should Have Told His
Little Girl and an expert guest featured on CNN, the
Oprah Winfrey Show, and the Tyra Banks show will deliver
the keynote address. Tony will also participate in an
all male panel discussion, From Our Hearts to Yours: A
Male’s Perspective on Love and Life. There will also be
interactive workshops led by community leaders and
experts including Senator Martha G. Scott, Sylvia
Hubbard, Dr. Bishop Corletta Vaughn, Dr. Michele Reid,
Stephanie L. Jones, Dr. Sabrina Jackson and more who
will speak on a variety of topics surrounding healthy
living for women.
